Articles on Crime and punishment
Russian author and philosopher, Fyodor Dostoevsky is well known for his
substantial work which is Crime and Punishment. It was first published in the
year 1866 in the conservative journal The Russian Messenger, in twelve monthly
installments. Dostoevsky elaborated and interpreted several social, physical,
mental conditions which he supposed to influence devil in a human being. No
wonder, crime existing in a world is a topic to debate to ponder upon.
Raskolnikov was a law student who tried harder to commit the perfect
murder of the old female pawnbroker. He assumed he will able to improve the
financial condition of his own and to prove that he belonged to a lot of men
not subject to predictable morals. After committing to follow the path of great
men such as Napoleon Bonaparte, he set an opinion to chase his goal by any mean
which may be legal or illegal.
The events saturated to call his theory into question as soon as
murdered happened. Unfortunately, he killed pawnbroker’s half-sister when she
encountered unexpectedly. In this dilemma and hustle and tussle situation, he
overlooked entire money and was able to use small amount he took. Following to
crime, he was engulfed by mental and physical illness.
This course of action leads to the hero’s trait of guiltiness. As the
hero feel intense guilt, entire actions enforced him to feel guilty. The
cunning espionage discovered the truth earlier but waited until Raskolnikov
accept his crime. Raskolnikov, eventually realized that he has to choose either
confession or suicide. A powerful psychological account, the story presents
thoughts and emotions from each character’s point of view. Other characters
such as Luzhin and Svidrigailov defeated themselves by capitalized others for
their own selfish motif. Svidrigailov’s suicide proves to Raskolnikov the
futility of egoism. Aided by Sonia, who grows to love him, Raskolnikov chooses
life, confession, and punishment, without attaining true redemption. Raskolnikov
was unable to choose his own motives behind crime; the protagonist acknowledges
risks psychic disintegration by spacious aside traditional morality.
The world represented by Fyodor Dostoevsky is quite harsh and there are
very few people who are either committed or helped during the crime. This is
the case happened to both Raskolnikov and his family. This bare setting exposed
the theme of misery, loneliness’, and alienation. Although Raskolnikov is far
too arrogant throughout the major part of the novel to come to terms with
religion or his idea of God, all around him there were a number of religious
messages come at him from Sonia and others which firmly believes in god’ s act
and its activities. The presence of religion is a unique paradox because this
novel is about an essentially godless person who commits a grave sin.
The purpose of discussing the events happening in Raskolnikov and his
family life is to direct the impact of crime on a particular mindset. This is
being the ground reality of crime and punishments.
